The Who in the story

We all know the Scripture is profitable for teaching all of us, so why does it matter who it was written to? Peter Krol answers this question in his blog The Knowable Word. Enjoy!

Why We Should Care Who The Audience Is

By Peter Krol

In yesterday’s post we considered who the primary audience of Proverbs was. Why bother?

The main reason is because, although the Bible was written for us (1 Cor 10:11), it was not written to us. Every book of the Bible was written by a particular person, for a particular group of people, in a particular situation. We put ourselves in danger of misunderstanding the text if we don’t first understand these historical circumstances. We must put ourselves in their shoes.

When God says no to something “good”

This is a part of the Christian life I have to always remember. Just because I have an authentic desire to do this or that for God, it doesn’t mean that it is an action or activity that He wants me to do. Thank you for sharing this Bev.

Psalm 131:1-3 ESV –
1 O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore.

Godly desires are not wrong. Wanting to serve as an act of worship is not wrong. But sometimes God says no to “good” things . . .

Confusion. Disappointment. Frustration. Now what? Where do I go with these emotions?

My God is sovereign over all. If I am his child, and I am because he has redeemed me and I have been bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), then God gives me my assignments. He has prepared…

Throwback Thursday ~ When God Says No

Sometimes God’s answer is no. And it is all for His glory, not for our gratification.

When I was sixteen years old, I was convinced God was calling me to be the next Sandi Patty…I wanted God to use me- to put me on a stage every night in front of thousands of people so I could sing to them about Him…Somehow, it never occurred to me to care what God thought about all this or what He might want to do in my life. If I thought about it at all, I just assumed He was on board with my plans. Like, how could He not be, right?¹

There’s much ado about dreaming big dreams for God in modern evangelicalism. Think of the biggest thing you want to do for God and then “step out on faith” and make it happen. Sometimes we’re even told God is offended if our dreams aren’t big enough. It means we don’t have…

Focus on Christ for Easter — Psalm 55 and Betrayal

Where do you turn when you feel betrayed?

Beverly's avatarPlea for Grace

Psalm 55:1-23 CSB –
1 God, listen to my prayer and do not hide from my plea for help. 2 Pay attention to me and answer me. I am restless and in turmoil with my complaint, 3 because of the enemy’s words, because of the pressure of the wicked. For they bring down disaster on me and harass me in anger. 4 My heart shudders within me; terrors of death sweep over me. 5 Fear and trembling grip me; horror has overwhelmed me. 6 I said, “If only I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. 7 “How far away I would flee; I would stay in the wilderness. 8 “I would hurry to my shelter from the raging wind and the storm.” 9 Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city; 10 day and night they make…

Finishing well

When I say that someone is finishing well, I don’t think of a test or a project, but of a person’s life.

A dear family member just finished well when he went to be with the Lord. A quiet man who could have done what so many do in life.

You see, he had a very poor upbringing. He had practically absent parents and no food, no one to tuck him in at night, no one to make sure he got his homework done. No one to model love or affection.

So many these days are using their poor upbringing to make excuses for a life of poor choices. He was not one of these people. He could have identified as a victim and therefore expected everyone to feel sorry for him. He didn’t do this either.

Instead he used every circumstance of his life to better himself. Through his military career, his marriage, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and then later in life, caring for his mother, stepfather, and wife, every decision he made whether good or bad, he used to improve himself. Not for his own selfish gain but because that is living a Christ-like life.

As his body was dying, he was given a gift not given to many. He was given the blessed time to say good-bye.

How many people, when given just a few weeks to live, would rail against the unfairness of it all? How many would spend it weeping and regretting past poor choices?

Not him. He spent his time welcoming people into his home, sharing his life with people, taking pictures with family and friends. Making jokes and focusing on ensuring others were comfortable and happy.

This is not to negate his physical condition. Make no mistake, he was in constant intense physical pain.

In scripture we are told to count it all joy when we experience various trials. He did that, to the very end.

Never before had I seen someone finish his race with such grace, love, honor, joy and contentment.

I learned a lot from him, and I am so proud and honored to be a small part of the legacy that he left.

Basic Training: Abortion

Abortion was a subject I had not planned to share this morning. However, when I opened my email and read it, I felt it not only timely, but necessary This is one of the most well-thought out and well-written article about Christians and abortions, I have come across in a long time. We MUST, as Christians be educated in this subject, lest what abortion is and is not, become our opinion and not fact.

I rarely write on abortion. But it’s not because I don’t feel strongly about it. It’s because it seems like it should be a given. That Christians shouldn’t have to be told that we don’t support abortion any more than we have to be told to breathe or eat. When I think about writing about abortion, I think, “What could I possibly say that hasn’t already been said a million times, and by people who have more experience in this arena than I do?”.

But the more I look out over the landscape of contemporary Christianity, the more I realize we can’t take any aspect of theology for granted. Because when we take the basics for granted, they don’t get taught to the next generation and we end up assuming they know things they don’t actually know. And that’s on…

My Heart for God

This begins a new adventure for me. I have always been more of a pen and paper kind of girl, sharing my thoughts and dreams in journals, lots and lots of journals. But as my heart is molded and changed by God, so have my thoughts and dreams evolved. I probably won’t write like any other “blogger”, I have no experience with it, in full disclosure, but I feel it is something God is calling me to do…..so I do.
